The Bottom Billion

The Bottom Billion By Paul Collier, A Professor of Economics at Oxford University is a very elaborate piece of work that clearly nails down the issues that drags the economies of the developing world and in particular “the bottom million” economies. You may be wondering what the “bottom billion” is, it simply refers to countries whose their economies has stagnated for the last 40 years and they account of one-sixth of the world population. As you may be aware that our world has a population of 6 billion people. If you care about poverty in the world this one is a must read book. Professor Collier lays down the main hindrances to economic growth in the countries of the bottom billion as he refers to them as traps and I will list them here: 1. The Conflict Trap – he explains that all societies have conflict, but they can trap a country in poverty. - I agree with Professor Collier that Civil war is costly and so is a coup d’état, very challenging to recover from especially if a country e...

The Alchemist - Amazing "To Realize One's Destiny is a Person's Only Obligation"

My good friend Ekeh popularly known as "THE CHAIRMAN" is a big fun of the Alchemist and he recommended this book for a read. On September 21st 2008 on my way back from Minneapolis,at Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, I happen to miss my flight which was departing at 4:45pm CST, even though I was in the airport 30 minutes before departure. I was definitely upset but since I was with a good friend and the great time we had together I tried to control myself and paid without question a fee that allows me to be put on standby list; usually uncharacteristic of me to just agree without speaking my mind. so I saw my good friend off their flight to MILWAUKEE and then I came back to wait for my standby flight 3 hrs later from my initial flight. I Had just finished reading another book "How to win friends & Influence people" - actually this book had some influence on my way of reacting to the situation than I usually will i.e. not argue especially since I was t...

2008 Update WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD

Ladies & Gentlemen here we go again, the new 2008 update for why the chicken cross the road, very funny enjoy. A 2008 update -Why did the chicken cross the road? BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a change! The chicken wanted change! JOHN MC CAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the r oad. HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure right from Day One that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me. GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here. DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun...

Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road

This funny! enjoy and like my friends says "this is purely humor, if it offends you....man see Dr. Phill coz Oprah wouldnt even be able to help you" Subject: QUESTION: WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD? QUESTION: WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD? * KINDERGARTEN TEACHER: To get to the other side. * PLATO: For the greater good. * ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross roads. * KARL MARX: It was a historical inevitability. * RONALD REAGAN: I forget. * CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK: To boldly go where no chicken has gone before. * MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR: ... I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives being called into question. * MACHIAVELLI: The point is that the chicken crossed the road. Who cares why? The end of crossing the road justifies whatever motive there was. * JERRY SEINFELD: Why does anyone cross a road? I mean, why doesn't anyone ever think to ask, What the heck was this chicken doing walking around all ove...
Is the fall out of the elections a result of ethnic issues as reported by the international media? Find it out here put in a Kenyan Perspective. The post election violence in Kenya has been labeled particularly by the international media as Ethnic instigated. This is absolutely wrong! From a Kenyan perspective and as a Kenyan I disagree with this hell bent notion. Ethnicity is not the primary causation of the recent post lection violence. However, the reality is that Ethnicity is an issue only because our politics have been since independence organized regionally just like most of the rest of the world where you find that certain regions traditionally vote for or belong to a certain politically party. Unfortunately, though our regions happen to be predominantly occupied by a certain tribes. For instance, Nyanza province is predominantly occupied By Luo and Kisii tribes; Central province by Kikuyu tribe, Rift valley is home to Kalenjins, Turkanas, and Masai etc. Because of this organiza...

ASESSION WITH A FRIEND ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION (AA).

AN ONLINE CHAT A SESSION WITH MY FRIEND JACK BACK AT CORNELL ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION (AA). I think it is always a good idea to have discussion and engage each other on the “hot” issues in our societies today. In doing so I think we can learn from each other and positively influence each other. I just decide to post this archive from one of the discussions that I have heard with friends especially in College concerning controversial issues in our societies today. Jack and I are great friend and we agree in almost many things. Here is our conversation on Affirmative action (AA) Notice that Jack seeked my opinion on AA, which he had with another friend. That is why am quoting some of the thinks he said or the other friend said in their conversation and I was stating my position on the same. Some of the quoted stuff may not be all Jack’s, could be other friend who said it. Anyways here we go: Hey Jack, My comments are in blue, I picked some of the points that I thought I had a different pers...

So what is the Most Suitable way to End the Current Stalemate in Kenya btwn the Government & ODM (Orange Democratic Movement)?

The Chairman of African Union (AU), the Ghanaian President Hon. John Kufuor led efforts to bring to agreement the two main political parties in Kenya: PNU led by President Kibaki and ODM led by Mr. Raila Odinga failed. His lead delegation coined as African solution to the stalemate between the two parties was supported by other prominent world leaders such as the former South African Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Desmond Tutu, who come to the country himself to mediate on the same. Others who supported the Kufuor led delegation are: the Europe Union and the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Dr Jendayi Frazer. Dr. Frazer also jetted into the country to mediate between the two parties as well. Now that the first attempt to broker consensus between the PNU and ODM has achieved less, the stage is now set for an intervention by African Eminent persons led by the former UN secretary general Kofi Annan. He will be joined among others by former Tanzanian President...

WHAT IS REAL CHANGE?

A friend of a friend of mine by the name Ryan Kuja asked me of the recent Kenyan post-election violence what he can do to help. I was so touched by his offer, and I really was without words on what to tell him, coz I knew right in my spirit that what the world needs is REAL CHANGE. The whole world needs change and so do Africa & of course Kenya needs real change. You are probably wondering what I mean by real change. Let me start by defining it, “Fundamentally, Change denotes the transition that occurs when something goes from being the same to being different”. It is a transformation of something to whole new thing. Back to my friends offer, the reason why I was lost without words is that my friend had a noble intention of helping to create some change in the then current situation. However, since neither I nor he could be able to be there physically to experience what was like on the ground, we both settled to prayer in the hope that things will be better, and so things did chang...

Africa Solution is Real Change

Am always amazed when I read a lot of stuff that are going on in Africa and Kenya in particular. Talk about Drought, Hunger, HIV infection & other horrible diseases, all these I can say have caused a lot of stress to this Land and caused a lot of burden to its residents. These calamities are both nature instigated as well as “artificially” instigated. My question will be why ? All these sufferings? How about how and when can these calamities be put to rest and oh yah by who ? How about Corruption which is rampant everywhere in the world, but it is said to be more rampant in Africa, which I will agree-somewhat that it has some truth in it. A few years ago the “wealthier” nations were asked by pro-poor scholars and politicians a like to forgive “poor nations” the debts they own them. Again the focus was on Africa. This was good intentions of course! I have one problem though that I want to ask especially as a challenge to Africa Leaders, where did these trillions and trillions of d...

MY HEART BLEEDS FOR MY COUNTRY KENYA

Am lost and without words, i can't fathom the post-election mayhem that was just witnessed in my lovely Country Kenya. I pray that God will heal the broken hearts for all those who lost their loved ones, which is really Kenya as a country has lost beloved ones in this ugly scene, the darkest week in the history of our country since Independence. God help Kenya. who is to blame for all these lives lost? this is the big question, could it be President Kibaki of PNU or could it be Mr. Raila Odinga of ODM? For sure, i don't care whether president Kibaki rigged the election, which of course seems to be backed by all evidences. However, though if Raila was a true democrat I will have expected him and other ODM leaders to have moved quickly to try and speak to their supporters to end the skirmishes. However, either willfully or not ODM leaders failed to move in to stop the Killing, this is not to imply that they in sighted their supporters, NO. My statement here is that as true democ...
